Poulenc’s rarely heard elegant, Baroque inspired Champêtre Concerto is one of the hidden jewels in the piano repertoire. Originally for harpsichord we hear it in the equally effective version for piano by the charismatic and multifaceted Stefano Bollani. The Milan native Bollani is as easily at home in jazz and popular music as he is in the classics. With crossover appeal, we hear him in a work that also synthesizes two musical styles.
A sharp turn East and we hear the tragic drama of life, death and triumph in Shostakovich’s intense masterpiece, the “Leningrad” Symphony. Written at the height of a humanitarian crisis outside it’s city walls during an unfolding siege by the Nazis during World War 2, the Leningrad is, beside a piece of great music, a part of Russian and world history. Maestro Scarano brings an imaginative
mastery and a unique perspective of the modern masterpieces to a work of great value.
