‘ CORRUPTION ’ ในที่นี้ พูดถึงความวิบัติของข้อมูลที่เราพบเจอผ่านการใช้อินเตอร์เน็ตอย่างปฏิเสธไม่ได้ ถึงแม้ว่าข้อมูลจำนวนมหาศาลบนพื้นที่ออนไลน์จะช่วยให้เรามีปัญญาที่สูงขึ้นเป็นหลายร้อยพันเท่า และมีประสิทธิภาพมากกว่าการส่งทอดพันธุกรรมผ่าน DNA สู่คนรุ่นต่อๆไป ทว่า บางส่วนของเราก็ยังขาดหายไป อาจเป็นสัมผัสของมนุษย์ หรืออารมณ์ความรู้สึกที่หายไปก็เป็นได้ ความคลุมเครือของการเปลี่ยนยุคนั้น ทิ้งไว้ซึ่งความเป็นไปได้อย่างไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด เพราะทั้งคู่กระตุ้นให้เกิดความรู้สึกที่น่าหวาดกลัว และกวนใจไปพร้อมๆ กัน ดังนั้น จึงเกิดเป็นความวิบัติของข้อมูลและเจตนารมณ์
ผลงานภาพเขียนชุดนี้ได้พูดถึงการตอบสนองทางเทคโนโลยีดิจิตัล ภาพทั้งหมดถูกวาดขึ้นจากเริื่องราวหลากหลายที่เป็นประเด็นและถูกแชร์กันอยู่บนพื้นที่ของอินเตอร์เน็ตและโซเชียลมีเดีย จากปัญญาประดิษฐ์ (A.I.) ไปจนถึงมลภาวะ ภาพเหล่านั้นประกอบไปด้วยวัตถุแทนสัญลักษณ์ที่อยู่เหนือกาลเวลาและเต็มไปด้วยสาระสำคัญทางวัฒนธรรม ถึงแม้ว่า เรื่องต่างๆ จะทำให้ภาพมีดูคลุมเครือ แต่ความคลุมเครือนั้นก็เผยถึงอนาคตของมนุษย์ที่ไม่มีความแน่นอน รวมไปถึงวิวัฒนาการของเราในขั้นต่อๆ ไป ซึ่งต่างจากงานของธนัชในชุดก่อนๆ ที่จับประเด็นบนความผิวเผิน และความงามในคุณค่าของภาพที่ถูกใช้ผ่านสื่อดิจิตัล ผลงานชุด ‘CORRUPTION’ นี้ จึงนำเสนอเรื่องราวที่ใช้การพิจารณาที่ลึกลงไปกว่าเดิม

ธนัช ตั้งสุวรรณ
ผมเติบโตมาในช่วงต้นยุคมิลเลนเนียลส์ และได้ใช้ชีวิตก่อนที่ ‘ยุคสารสนเทศ’ จะเปลี่ยนแปลงทุกสิ่ง ยุคที่ยังไม่มีโซเชียลมีเดีย หรือแม้แต่ความสะดวกสบายในการเชื่อมต่อกับโลกอินเทอร์เน็ต ผมจำได้ว่า ตอนที่ผมเด็กๆ มักจะสร้างจินตนาการว่าอยู่ในยานอวกาศและหยิบหนังสือมากดเล่นเป็นหน้าจอสัมผัส ในวันนั้น มันช่างดูห่างไกลเกินกว่าที่จะเกิดขึ้นในช่วงชีวิตของผม แต่วันนี้ ความเป็นไปได้ของนวัตกรรมทางเทคโนโลยีที่เคยอยู่เพียงแค่ในจินตนาการก็ สามารถเกิดขึ้นจริงได้อย่างไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด และไม่มีทีท่าที่จะพัฒนาช้าลงเลย ผมมีความสนใจเรื่องของทวิภาวะ (duality) ในชีวิตมนุษย์ก่อนและหลังยุคที่ข้อมูลข่าวสารถาโถมเข้าใส่บนหน้าจอ ความสงสัยในเรื่องพวกนี้ทำให้ผมเริ่มค้นคว้าตั้งแต่วัยรุ่น ผมเริ่มต้นจากการลงเรียนวิชาพื้นฐานศิลปะและการออกแบบที่ Central Saint Martins หลังจากนั้นก็เลือกเรียนคณะวิจิตรศิลป์ที่ Chelsea College of Arts ที่ทำให้ผมสานจินตนาการในเรื่องนี้ต่อไปได้
ผมรู้สึกว่ามันเปลี่ยนแปลงพฤติกรรมการอ่านและเก็บข้อมูลของคน รูปแบบในงานของผมจึงใช้การทำซ้ำ เลือกประเด็นที่กว้างมาจัดวางอย่างไม่มีแบบแผน มันสะท้อนถึงความสนใจของมนุษย์ที่สั้นลงอันเนื่องมาจากผลกระทบของอินเตอร์เน็ต ข้อมูลมากมายถูกทำให้สูญหายไประหว่างกระบวนการอัปโหลด และยังทำให้เกิดการบริโภคในรูปแบบใหม่ๆ การทำซ้ำในงานนี้อาจถือเป็นการแสดงการคำนับต่อ วอร์ฮอล และศิลปินแนวป๊อปอาร์ตอีกหลายคน ภาพวาดของผมเป็นเพียงเรื่องราวบทหนึ่งที่สังคมสมัยใหม่กำลังพูดถึงกันอยู่ ข้อมูลที่เราบริโภคอาจเป็นเรื่องตื้นๆ และเป็นข้อมูลที่ถูกบิดเบือน บางที อาจคาดการณ์และเป็นสัญญาณเตือนว่า ยุคที่มืดกว่าเดิมกำลังคืบคลานเข้ามา

จากลอนดอนสู่กรุงเทพฯ ศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ที่หมั่นจัดแสดงผลงานระหว่างเรียนที่ประเทศอังกฤษ ศิษย์เก่าโรงเรียน Harrow, Central Saint Martins และ Chelsea College of Art & Design ธนัชเพิ่งเดินทางกลับประเทศไทยหลังเรียนจบ และได้จัดแสดงนิทรรศการเดี่ยวผลงานจิตรกรรมเหนือจินตนาการของเขามาแล้ว 2 นิทรรศการเมื่อปีที่ผ่านมา

‘CORRUPTION’ alludes to corruption of data, something that we’ve all experienced through the mandatory interaction with the internet today. Although this of abundance information is supposed to enlighten us and is hundreds of thousands of times as effective as passing on information to later generations than our DNA, there is a part of us that is missing. Perhaps the human touch, or our emotional sentiments. The ambiguity of this transitional phase leaves us with unlimited possibilities, both inspiring yet frightening and disturbing at the same time. Hence the corruption of data and intention.
These works represent our digital sensibilities. All the images are illustrations of various anecdotes that represent issues that widely circulate our immediate space of the internet and social media. From A.I. to pollution, the images contain symbolic objects that have transcended time and also ones that are yet to be imbued with cultural significance. The narratives although clear produce images that are also ambiguous. This ambiguity alludes to the uncertain future of humans and our next step of evolution. Unlike most previous works, where the emphasis was on the shallow veneer and aesthetic value of images that have seemingly been digitally mediated, the works in ‘CORRUPTION’ tries to put the narrative into deeper consideration.
ARTIST BIO – DHANUT TUNGSUWAN
As an early millennial, I grew up experiencing life before the ‘information age’. Before social media and convenient internet access. I remember being very young and creating or imagining being in a spaceship and pressing on books pretending it was touch screen. At that time I thought it was such a far removed concept and it probably wouldn’t happen in my life time. It seems possibilities are endless now with technology growing at an exponential rate and no sign of it slowing down. I’m interested in the duality, the life before and the life after this explosion of information on our screens. This curiosity really resonated throughout my teenage years. I went to Central Saint Martins to do a foundation course, then I went on to do fine art at the Chelsea College of Art. This allowed my thoughts on this subject to really manifest and in turn be imbued into something physical through paintings.
I feel it’s really changed the way we read, and retain information that is why there is a lot of repetition in my work. There’s also a wide array of subject matter and very much a randomness in narrative. This really reflects our short attention spans due to the internet. A lot of information is loss through the process of uploading information also I feel and it’s also allow for a new type of consumerism. I think perhaps the repetition also might be a nod to Warhol and some of the other pop artists. The paintings are all little anecdotes that allude to modern day topic of conversations, which are often very shallow and pseudo-intellectual. Perhaps also a skeptical prediction and warning of a much darker time to come.
DHANUT TUNGSUWAN (b. 1994)
From London to Bangkok, a young-blood artist who has had a number of exhibitions during his studies in Britain. A Harrow alum, he graduated from art and design at Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Art & Design. He is just back from the UK and had two solo shows since last year with his beyond imagination paintings.
